China - Between Past and Future

On 27th April 06, the programme China – Between Past and Future and the exhibition open at the House of World Cultures. We cordially invite you to join us.

Our programme explores the development of new forms and new individual languages in the fine arts, music, opera and literature, and their relationship to China’s fascinating traditions.

The opening – with performances, statements and previews – offers a foretaste of events to come. Mo Yan, the author of the novel ‘Red Sorghum’ will be speaking. (Zhang Yimou’s film adaptation of the book was a great success in the West.) Wu Wei, the master of the sheng – the Chinese mouth organ – and saxophonist Gert Anklam open a ‘Dialogue of Sounds’. Music theatre star Wu Hsing-Kuo presents scenes from King Lear in his much-celebrated adaptation of Shakespeare’s play performed Chinese Opera style, Zhao Zhigang scenes from his Shanghai Opera performance ‘The Dream of the Red Chamber’. Tian Mansha, one of the most influential opera artists in China and curator of the music programme at the House of World Cultures, opens the preview. There will also be a big-screen showing of silent-film classic ‘The Goddess’, accompanied by live music.

The exhibition ‘Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China’ opens with three performances entitled ‘Performance Red!’ Liang Tao improvises a dance, on a floor covered in a liquid menstruation-red paint, to eight pieces of music played simultaneously. Li Wei communicates with visitors in a mirror performance. Using a mixture of paint and his own blood, extreme performer Yang Uhichao paints portraits of visitors.

At the opening weekend, a 3-day international symposium entitled Cultural Memory will be held, serving as an introductory forum for discussing and reflecting upon central aspects of the theme ‘Cultural Memory’ in China.

The symposium is a co-operation between House of World Cultures and Bundeszentrale fuer politische Bildung.

We look forward to seeing you at the House of World Cultures!
